Shaving Soap vs Shaving Cream

Shaving Soap vs Shaving Cream

Shaving Soap or Shaving Cream? Which is right for you?

Shaving soaps and shaving creams can be used interchangeably but there are subtle differences between the two.

SHAVING SOAP

Formula

Shaving soaps, the more traditional option, have a hard consistency and measure about three inches in diameter. Formulated with either a glycerin or tallow base, shaving soaps provide a lubricating cushion for a close, smooth shave. Their nourishing formula will also help keep skin hydrated long after a shave and minimize post-shave irritation.

Lather

Shaving soaps require slightly more effort to create a full and rich lather. If you’re partial to a richer lather, higher quality soaps, those that are triple-milled, will be your go-to as they create an exceptional lather, similar to those you’d find in barbershop experience.

Application

To get the most out of your soap, pair it with a shaving brush.

SHAVING CREAM

Formula

In shaving creams, you’ll generally find glycerin, lanolin, and some formulation of sodium and/or potassium hydroxide. Such ingredients help give the cream its soft consistency and rich lubricating properties.

Lather

Shaving creams don’t require much work to form a generous lather. If you’re on the go and looking for a quick shave, a cream is a better option.  They are easy to use and come packaged in convenient tubs or tubes and are ideal for travel.

Application

Unlike shaving soaps, shaving creams can be applied with or without a shaving brush. Many apply shaving cream without a brush for convenience. If using a brush to apply cream, it’s recommended to directly soak the brush to formulate a fast, rich lather.
