14th Century
Using water power from the Wupper River, craftsmen operated grinding stones to manufacture cutlery.
16th – 18th Century
As production and demand increased, Solingen becomes a centre of blade production with manufacturers specializing in knives, scissors, and swords. To ensure quality and consistency with production, strict guilds were created for the grinders across Solingen. These certified techniques were passed down through generations and are still the foundation of modern production for many brands.
20th Century
The name ‘Solingen’ receives official designation to recognize brands and products that meet the standards and conditions of high-quality craftsmanship.
Family businesses, such as Erbe Solingen, establish themselves as expert craftsmen, many of which continue to be run by third and fourth generations.
21st Century
Along with celebrating 650 years of craftsmanship, Solingen remains synonymous with quality and is the leading producer of knives, blades other tools. Representing quality craftsmanship and rigorous production standards, Solingen’s products are sold worldwide.
