This is one of the questions we receive often. The short and simple answer is: no.
While some manufacturers approve of melting certain types of soap pucks, we advise our customers against melting or heating any type of soaps. Heating or melting a shaving soap can change the soap’s overall properties and composition. Such changes can affect:
- Overall performance
- Lubricating and moisturizing ability
- Lather ability, and
- Fragrance strength and quality
In melting your soap, you risk letting it overheat or keeping it heated for too long, hence burning away the soap’s fragrance and chemical properties that allow for proper lubrication and lathering—properties you need in order to successfully shave.
Melting Alternatives
Instead of heating or melting your soap, try to shave or grate it down to the desired size. Alternatively, you can clump together small leftover soap pieces and press them on top of a newer puck. You can then lather as you would with any other soap.
