Preserve the Pen

Pick up a pen and practice the art of writing in honour of National Handwriting Day!

Origin

Celebrated on January 23rd, National Handwriting Day is more than just a fun theme day. It falls on John Hancock’s birthday, the first person to sign the Declaration of Independence and to popularize the modern signature.  Started by the Writing Instrument Manufacturers Association in 1977, the holiday is meant to recognize the importance of penmanship and writing.

Fun Fact: Hancock’s signature is so well-recognized that many use the term “signature” and “John Hancock” interchangeably.

History of Writing

Writing dates back to 3000 B.C.! View the chart below to see the development of writing throughout the ages.

How to Celebrate

What’s the best way to celebrate the holiday? Writing of course!

Put down the electronics and go back to basics with a pen and a piece of paper. Journal, write and send a letter, practice calligraphy, or just write for pleasure to help keep the art of writing alive.

Fun Fact: Handwriting helps with focus while reducing stress and improving memory. It also helps develop children’s cognitive abilities.  (Writing Instrument Manufacturers Association)
